Four Kilometers southwest from Platanos is Laki, the main port of Leros, naturally protected from bad weather, the largest natural port of the mediterranean sea.
It offers modern port / marina services and two units serving yachts. It looks like a huge lake that leaves an opening of only 400 meters from the sea side. This natural characteristic was the reason it was called Porto Lago from the Italians and was selected as a naval station.
Laki has its own unique character compared to the rest of the island, but it is unusual and very impressive. Dominating buildings, built side by side on the bay with modern and lean architecture of international style. Buildings-Monuments, large streets, trees and parks, all designed and constructed by the Italians during the war (since 1934).
Laki is the most organised settlement of the island with a foreign character compared to the island style, since it was built on an european urban plan of the start of the previous century, and is the second main pole of the island in terms of housing.
